A tragic mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, has resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, including the suspected shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed that most of the victims were young students, aged 12 or 13, who were in the school library at the time of the attack.
Authorities revealed that the shooter, who had been transitioning to female for six years, had prior encounters with the police due to mental health issues, including self-harm. Firearms were previously seized from her residence, where her mother and stepbrother were also found deceased. The police recovered a long gun and a modified handgun from the scene.
The remote town, home to about 2,400 people, is grappling with the profound loss. Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed deep sorrow, highlighting the resilience of the community, which has historically faced economic downturns and natural crises. Two individuals sustained severe injuries and are in critical but stable condition.
