Counterfeit spice racket busted in Khari Baoli

In a significant bust on Saturday, police seized 802 kg of counterfeit spices and condiments from Khari Baoli, a renowned spice market in Old Delhi. Acting on a tip-off, law enforcement discovered an illegal manufacturing unit operating from a house in the Naya Bans area.

During the raid, authorities found adulterated spices, artificial colours, and raw materials used to create fake products. These included heavily mixed turmeric, red chilli, and yellow chilli powders, combined with hazardous industrial dyes, coarse rice, and pulverised chilli and coriander stalks.

One person, identified as Kalamjeet (31), was arrested at the scene. He allegedly confessed to producing and supplying counterfeit spices such as turmeric, red chilli, yellow chilli, coriander, amchoor, and garam masala. The fake products were reportedly distributed throughout the Delhi-NCR region.

Food safety officials from the GNCTD were called to the location and collected samples for laboratory testing. Legal action is being pursued under the food safety laws, with a case registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) concerning adulteration and cheating.
