Masked Gang Snatches €5m of Prized Tuscan Reds
9 Oct
Summary
- Thirty thousand bottles of wine worth €5m were stolen.
- Thieves disabled alarms and cameras at the winery.
- The stolen wines are prized Tignanello, Solaia, and Guado al Tasso.
In a significant act of wine theft, approximately 30,000 bottles collectively worth about €5 million were stolen from the renowned Marchesi Antinori winery in Tuscany. The incident occurred on Saturday, October 4, 2026, as the company prepared for an international shipment.
At least seven masked individuals are suspected of deactivating alarms and disabling surveillance cameras. They reportedly used company forklifts to load two large trucks with Marchesi Antinori's prized Tignanello, Solaia, and Guado al Tasso Tuscan reds.
The chief executive described the theft as the largest of its kind in Italy. He expressed hope for the recovery of the stolen merchandise, noting that such a large volume of wine cannot easily disappear unnoticed given the numerous cameras on Tuscan roads.
Marchesi Antinori, founded in 1385, exports to 170 countries and had a revenue of €263 million last year. The company suspects the thieves had insider knowledge and were discerning wine lovers, given the value of the stolen bottles, which typically range from €150 to €500 each.
This major theft follows a series of other wine thefts reported in Italy this year, including incidents in the northern Piedmont region where hundreds of thousands of euros worth of bottles were also taken.
