This intervention is considered one of the largest cat meat busts documented in Vietnam. Nine individuals have been arrested, allegedly specializing in stealing and collecting cats for the illicit trade.
The rescued cats, including pregnant animals and newborn kittens, are now under the care of veterinarians and volunteers at a temporary rescue center. This seizure has facilitated the reunion of approximately 40 cats with their owners who had reported them missing.
Phuong Tham from Humane World for Animals highlighted the grim reality of the cat meat trade, noting that thousands of cats are trafficked and slaughtered monthly across the country. The successful bust and swift police action are seen as a crucial step in combating this widespread and brutal trade.
