40-Year Wait: Justice for Mother's Unsolved Stabbing
26 Feb
Summary
- Belinda Gardella was fatally stabbed in 1983.
- Her children are seeking accountability after 40 years.
- Case currently under review by Michigan Attorney General.

Belinda Gardella's children are still seeking justice more than 40 years after their mother was fatally stabbed in 1983. Belinda was stabbed in the chest on September 25, 1983, while in a vehicle with her ex-husband, Paul Gardella. Paul's account of the incident, which involved alleged assailants, has been questioned by investigators due to numerous inconsistencies and a lack of corroborating evidence.
Despite past domestic violence reports against Paul Gardella, including an incident where he allegedly threatened Belinda with a knife five months before her death, no charges were filed. The family has long suspected Paul's involvement, a sentiment echoed by the investigating detective who reopened the case in 2023.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has denied warrant requests in 1983, 2001, and again in 2025, citing insufficient evidence for prosecution. Most recently, the case was submitted to the Michigan Attorney General's office in November 2025 and remains under review as of January 2026.
Belinda's six children, now with over 20 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, continue to advocate for closure. They have created a Facebook page and are urging anyone with information to come forward, hoping the current review by the state offers a final chance for justice.
