- Inmates' deaths prompt calls for the resignation of the MDOC Director.
- Concerns over prison conditions include mold and lack of medical care.

A third inmate has died at the Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Washtenaw County within the last month. Ashley Hoath, 36, passed away on Saturday morning at Trinity Health Hospital.
Hoath's death is unexpected and under investigation. She is the third inmate to die at the facility in under a month. This alarming trend has prompted approximately 30 lawmakers to demand the resignation of Michigan Department of Corrections Director Heidi Washington.
Two other women, Khaira Howard, 28, and Rebecca Fackler, 57, died in May. Attorneys representing their families allege they were denied medical care. Two male inmates also died within the past month, one from a stabbing and another from a fall.
Director Washington stated that investigations are underway and promised answers regarding the circumstances of Ms. Hoath's death and the preceding ones. The prison has recently faced criticism regarding its conditions.
Testimony in February highlighted issues such as mold and insufficient medical care, echoing complaints that have intensified since the May deaths. Washington and other healthcare leaders have visited the facility regularly.
State and U.S. representatives have voiced strong concerns, calling for immediate action, accountability, and transparency from the Michigan Department of Corrections. They emphasize that these deaths cannot be dismissed as routine and demand clear responses.
