- Suspect had escaped prison twice prior to the crime.

A 62-year-old man, Robert Scott Froberg, has been charged in the 1996 kidnapping and murder of 7-year-old Morgan Violi. The case remained a mystery for nearly three decades until DNA evidence connected Froberg to the crime. U.S. Attorney Kyle G. Bumgarner announced the charges, emphasizing the victim's identity beyond her tragic end.
Froberg was serving time in Alabama for a robbery conviction when FBI agents interviewed him. Records show he had escaped prison twice in 1996 after being convicted of a 1988 robbery. Following one escape, a van stolen from near his childhood home was used in Morgan's abduction from Bowling Green, Kentucky, on July 24, 1996.
Morgan was found dead in woods in White House, Tennessee, in October 1996. A hair found in the stolen van, which was later discovered at a truck stop, helped develop a DNA profile leading to Froberg. He has since admitted to kidnapping Morgan, strangling her, and discarding her body.
Froberg is expected to appear in court for an arraignment following his transfer into federal custody. The investigation highlights the persistence of law enforcement in resolving cold cases through scientific advancements.
