Police in Manorhaven are investigating after 21 dogs were discovered in a commercial building exhibiting signs of neglect over the past weekend. Authorities responded to a call regarding sick animals late Saturday evening and found the dogs in various states of distress. The Town of North Hempstead Animal Control subsequently removed the animals.
The rescue was prompted by an animal advocate, Marie Etheridge, who grew concerned about her former foster dog, Eska, being boarded at a facility managed by Selma Kizil. Etheridge reported finding the dogs barking in distress at a seemingly vacant storefront.
Kizil, who manages Jou Jou & Jorgie's Doggy Day Care and founded Charlie's Rescue, denied claims of neglect, asserting the dogs were cared for. She stated she was out of town for two weeks and believed employees were managing the animals' care, but admitted that one employee may have failed to provide adequate food and water.
This situation occurs as Kizil is already facing separate charges in Pennsylvania, arraigned last month for allegedly transporting 45 animals in inhumane conditions without water. One dog in that case required euthanasia due to severe injuries, though Kizil has pleaded not guilty to those charges.
No charges have been filed in Manorhaven as of the report, and the investigation is ongoing. Etheridge expressed a hope for authorities to take the matter seriously and for Eska's return.
