A breakthrough has been made in the 2018 fatal shooting of Lavert Durden, a West Augustine man. Authorities announced the arrest of Brandon Calloway, 38, who is already serving a prison sentence on unrelated charges.
Detectives with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes unit charged Calloway with first-degree murder. The incident occurred on November 16, 2018, when deputies discovered Durden, 28, shot and killed at Herbert and Christopher streets.
The investigation into Durden's death remained open for more than seven years. A St. Johns County grand jury returned an indictment against Calloway last week, leading to his apprehension. He has been transferred to the St. Johns County Jail and is being held without bond.
