An extensive 46-day enforcement operation across nine central districts has led to the registration of over 1.55 lakh cases related to helmetless riding and drunken driving. During this period, authorities collected more than Rs 2.07 crore in fines from traffic violators.
The majority of cases, 1,48,906, were filed against motorists for riding without helmets. Trichy district registered the highest number of these violations with 28,738 cases. Additionally, 6,884 cases of drunken driving were recorded, with Karur reporting the highest number at 1,606 instances.
Fines for helmetless riding start at Rs 1,000, while first-time drunken driving offenses can incur penalties of Rs 10,000, escalating for repeat offenders. Trichy contributed the largest portion of the collected fines, amounting to Rs 90.1 lakh. Authorities are continuing vehicle checks and plan to deploy ANPR cameras and breathalyzers to further strengthen enforcement and reduce accidents.
