The illicit sales were being conducted through a dark web site known as Nexus. Cybersecurity journalist Brian Krebs uncovered the operation when the hacker offered his own driver's license as a free sample, and Hegseth's license for $100.
Investigations suggest that the data may have been exfiltrated from IDScan.net, an identity verification service based in New Orleans. Clients of IDScan.net include major corporations like FedEx and Hertz. The disappearance of the Nexus website from the dark web has been noted, though its reappearance is possible.
If verified, this breach represents one of the most significant data compromises in recent history. Millions of individuals are now at heightened risk of identity theft and related fraudulent schemes. Federal authorities, including the FBI, are reportedly investigating the incident.
