A district court has delivered life sentences to 12 individuals in connection with a murder case that occurred 27 years ago. This conviction is tied to the Shia-Sunni riots that took place in Mubarakpur. The court pronounced the sentences on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, after concluding the hearing.
This judgment follows the conviction of all 12 accused on February 13, 2026. Each convict has also been fined Rs 66,500. The case dates back to April 30, 1999, when an FIR was filed regarding the disappearance of Ali Akbar. His beheaded body was recovered on the same day.
Authorities' investigation indicated that Akbar was allegedly assaulted and killed by members of the Sunni community while returning from a Muharram procession. Police had filed charges against multiple accused. During the trial, four of the accused passed away. The court examined nine witnesses before reaching its verdict.
