Summary

- Crime involved repeated assault under marriage promise.
- Court also imposed significant fines on the convict.
In Pilibhit, a 28-year-old man received a 10-year prison sentence for repeated rape and criminal intimidation. The court found him guilty under sections 376 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code. This conviction stems from a series of assaults against a 21-year-old woman, initially deceived by a promise of marriage.
The perpetrator, originally from Bareilly, met the survivor in Pilibhit city. Their relationship developed, and marriage was initially supported by his family. However, in early March 2023, he forcibly assaulted her at an under-construction house. His family later reneged on their marriage commitment, offering the victim ₹1.5 lakh to end the relationship.
When the survivor refused the offer and threatened to expose him, she allegedly faced death threats from the convict's family. Pilibhit police registered an FIR on June 26, 2023, following her complaint. Medical examination confirmed the sexual assault allegations. The man was arrested and charged on July 22, 2023.
After reviewing evidence, the court sentenced the man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a ₹15,000 fine for rape. He also received a one-year sentence and a ₹2,000 fine for criminal intimidation, with additional jail time if fines are not paid.
