As of August 5th, 2025, the Xizang autonomous region has seen a significant increase in overseas visitors over the past year, with the number of trips nearly doubling. In 2024, Xizang received over 63.89 million visits from both domestic and international tourists, a 15.8% rise from the previous year. The region's chairman, Gama Cedain, stated that Xizang is working to integrate its cultural tourism industry with economic and social development, aiming to become a world-class tourist destination.
Xizang's economic growth has also been remarkable, with its GDP reaching 276.5 billion yuan ($38.47 billion) in 2024 - 155 times the figure from 1965 when the region was established. The region has maintained an average annual GDP growth rate of 8.9% over the past six decades, with key industries like clean energy and cultural tourism thriving and laying the foundation for a modern industrial system.
Infrastructure development has also seen significant progress in Xizang, with the region now boasting over 124,900 kilometers of roads, 1,359 kilometers of railway, and 183 domestic and international air routes. This has helped to better connect the "roof of the world" and enhance the region's self-sustaining development capacity, which has ranked among the highest growth rates in the country for several consecutive years.
