Indonesian Worker Detained in US Immigration Raid at Hyundai Plant

On September 8, 2025, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the Indonesian Consulate General in Houston has obtained consular access to communicate with an Indonesian citizen detained during a recent US immigration raid at the Hyundai electric vehicle plant in Georgia.

The individual, identified by the initials CHT, is an employee of PT HLI Green Power, a joint venture between Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution that produces batteries for electric vehicles in Indonesia. CHT was in the US on a 1-month business trip, equipped with a passport, visa, and an invitation from the company.

The raid, which took place on Thursday, involved several US agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the FBI, Customs and Border Patrol, and others. A total of 475 people, including South Korean nationals, were arrested and detained during the operation at the Hyundai Metaplant in Ellabell, Georgia.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the PWNI Directorate will hold a meeting with PT HLI Green Power to discuss the apprehension of the Indonesian worker. The ministry has confirmed that it is working to secure the release and safe return of the detained Indonesian citizen.
