Crop Insurance Payouts Surge Across India's Agrarian Heartland
22 Aug
Summary
- Maharashtra tops crop insurance payouts, receiving ₹18,920 crore
- Rajasthan and Karnataka also among states with highest claim payouts
- Crop insurance data reveals climate vulnerabilities and state efforts

According to the latest data as of August 2025, India's total crop insurance payouts have reached ₹47,602 crore for the period from 2022-23 to 2024-25. The data reveals that some of the country's largest and most industrialized state economies have also emerged as top recipients of these insurance claims, underscoring the continued importance of the agricultural sector in providing livelihoods.
Maharashtra has emerged as the state with the highest claim payouts under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) and the Restructured Weather-Based Crop Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS), with around 28.3 million of its farmers having been paid claims worth approximately ₹18,920 crore over the last three years. This is largely due to the state's vulnerability to natural calamities, especially in the Vidarbha region, which is prone to drought.
Rajasthan, an agrarian and mining-oriented economy, follows closely with ₹8,281 crore in claim payouts to around 22.7 million farmers. Karnataka, an industrialized and service-led state, is in the third spot, with a ₹6,845 crore payout given to over 5.2 million farmers during the same period.
Other states that have seen significant payouts include Haryana (₹3,069 crore), Madhya Pradesh (₹2,892 crore), Tamil Nadu (₹1,749 crore), and Uttar Pradesh (₹1,729 crore). The data offers insights into the climate vulnerabilities faced by these states and the efforts being made to support farmers and rural livelihoods.
