Aussie Households Embrace Solar Batteries at Record Pace
1 Aug
Summary
- Over 19,000 home batteries installed in a single month
- NSW households leading the charge, followed by Queensland and South Australia
- Consumers recognize this as a "one-time opportunity" to access subsidies
As of August 1st, 2025, Australian households have been installing solar batteries at a record pace, with more than 19,000 registered in a single month. This unprecedented adoption comes just one month after the launch of the federal government's $2.3 billion Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which offered discounts of 30% on the technology.
The surge in installations has been particularly pronounced in New South Wales, where households account for over a third (38%) of the new battery registrations. Queensland (23%) and South Australia (15%) have also seen significant uptake. Analysts note that many consumers are recognizing this as a "one-time opportunity" to access a substantial subsidy and are investing in larger battery systems, with the average capacity reaching 17 kilowatt-hours compared to the typical 10-12kWh.
The rapid growth in home battery installations is expected to continue, with industry experts predicting that Australian households could install more than 220,000 batteries this year - more than tripling the 72,500 installed in 2024. However, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has warned that greater protections may be needed to prevent providers from exploiting the popularity of the scheme, and has urged consumers to compare multiple quotes before making a purchase.
