Apple Expands iPhone Production in India, Reduces China Reliance
19 Aug
Summary
- All four iPhone 17 models now produced in India
- India exported $7.5B in iPhones in last 4 months
- Tata Group's role set to grow, may account for half of India's iPhone output

As of August 19, 2025, Apple has significantly expanded its iPhone production in India, marking a major milestone in the company's efforts to diversify its supply chain and reduce reliance on China for U.S.-bound models.
For the first time, all four iPhone 17 models, including the high-end Pro versions, are now being produced in India ahead of next month's launch. This represents a significant shift, as India has emerged as a core hub in Apple's global supply chain.
In the past four months, from April to July 2025, India has exported a staggering $7.5 billion worth of iPhones, a substantial acceleration compared to the $17 billion exported during the entire previous fiscal year. This expansion includes the recent opening of Tata Group's facility in Hosur and Foxconn's site near Bangalore's airport.
Tata's role is set to grow sharply, with its plants expected to account for as much as half of India's iPhone output within the next two years. This shift comes as Apple looks to limit tariff risks tied to China production, even as U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly urged CEO Tim Cook to stop building new facilities in India.
For Apple, the strategy is clear: diversify now to keep shipments steady and costs predictable, as the company continues to navigate the evolving global supply chain landscape.
