Summary
- Amazon expands free same-day grocery delivery to over 1,000 US cities
- Amazon aims to reach 2,300 cities by the end of 2025
- 37% of US Amazon customers now purchase grocery items in their orders

In a significant development, Amazon has recently expanded its free same-day grocery delivery service to more than 1,000 cities and towns across the United States as of August 2025. This move is seen as a major setback for retail giant Walmart, as Amazon continues to dominate the e-commerce landscape.
According to the report, Amazon's same-day grocery delivery service now complements its existing grocery delivery options, including Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market. The company is investing $4 billion to expand this service, particularly in rural areas, to make grocery shopping more convenient and affordable for its customers, especially Prime members.
The data shared by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) reveals that 37% of US Amazon customers now include traditional grocery store items, both perishable and non-perishable, in their latest orders. This figure has risen by 7 percentage points over the past five years and is more than double what it was a decade ago.

Amazon's CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, Doug Herrington, stated that the company is "continuously innovating to make grocery shopping simpler, faster, and more affordable for our customers." The expansion of the same-day grocery delivery service is seen as a significant step in this direction, as Amazon aims to integrate perishable items into its efficient logistics network.
