Zydus, Biocon: Precision Oncology's Dual Paths
24 Oct
Summary
- Zydus acquired US biologics facilities for CDMO expansion.
- Biocon's Pebrilzo gained EU recommendation in Sep 2026.
- Both firms navigate market access, R&D, and pricing challenges.
India faces a growing cancer burden, prompting pharmaceutical companies like Zydus Lifesciences and Biocon to explore precision oncology.
Zydus is diversifying its oncology business through biosimilars like trastuzumab and its recent nivolumab biosimilar, Tishtha, launched in January 2026. The company also expanded its international presence with approvals for biosimilars in Mexico and Bolivia.
In June 2025, Zydus acquired two US biologics manufacturing facilities from Agenus, establishing a CDMO presence. Additionally, Zydus partnered with Formycon for a pembrolizumab biosimilar in the US and Canada, aiming for future commercialization.
Biocon, through Biocon Biologics, offers established oncology biosimilars and small-molecule treatments. In FY2024-25, it launched bevacizumab in Europe and emerging markets.
A significant development for Biocon was the September 2026 recommendation for its pertuzumab biosimilar, Pebrilzo, by the European Medicines Agency. A global patent settlement in October 2026 secured early launch dates for Pebrilzo in various markets, including the EU in Q1 2027 and the US in Q3 2028.
Both companies' financial reports for Q1FY27 do not break down oncology-specific revenue. Zydus reported standalone revenue of ₹2,872.20 crore, while Biocon reported consolidated revenue of ₹4,336 crore. Zydus's stock showed positive returns, while Biocon's declined.
Challenges remain for both firms, including the need for accessible diagnostics, managing R&D expenses, and navigating price competition. Turning scientific progress in cancer care into profitable and dependable business growth requires strategic execution and financial acumen.
