Xpeng, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, announced on Monday the commencement of mass production for its first robotaxi. This significant development occurred at the company's headquarters in Guangzhou. The company is targeting the ambitious goal of achieving fully driverless operations by the early part of 2027.
Xpeng is intensifying its strategic focus on driverless vehicles and humanoid robotics. This acceleration is driven by the escalating competition within the world's largest automotive market. The newly produced robotaxi is based on Xpeng's GX platform and has been highlighted as China's first production-ready, pre-assembled robotaxi model.
Notably, this model was developed entirely using the company's in-house technologies. Xpeng plans to initiate pilot robotaxi operations during the second half of the current year. The company anticipates producing several hundred to thousands of these robotaxis within the next 12 to 18 months, signaling a substantial expansion of its autonomous fleet.
