The World Bank has unveiled a new strategy centered on job creation to bolster small island states and other vulnerable nations. Announced during the IMF and World Bank spring meetings, this initiative recognizes the unique economic hurdles these countries face, such as limited economic bases and exposure to shocks.
The strategy employs differentiated tools to stimulate private investment and enact reforms that ease business operations and expansion. Priority sectors for boosting growth and employment include health, affordable energy, resilient infrastructure, and micro- and small businesses.
World Bank President Ajay Banga emphasized a tailored approach, acknowledging that support costs more in smaller states. The Bank plans to streamline services, utilize flexible financing, and scale up solutions to maximize impact, with partnerships playing a crucial role.
Examples of this approach are already underway, including co-financing an urban resilience project in Tonga with the Asian Development Bank. Further collaborations are planned, such as an initiative with the Inter-American Development Bank for the Caribbean. The Bank is also enhancing diagnostic tools, with in-depth constraint analyses planned for several countries.
