In a significant move towards gender inclusivity, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has successfully deployed over 5,100 female staff to manage toll booths. These women are now operating at more than 1,140 toll plazas nationwide, covering extensive national highway and expressway networks. This deployment is a key step in NHAI's commitment to promoting women's empowerment within frontline operational roles.
The decision was reached after extensive consultations with stakeholders, including fee plaza operators and industry associations. The unanimous agreement among all toll operators ensures the smooth integration of female staff into user fee collection during day shifts. Future expansion of the female workforce at toll plazas is anticipated.
To ensure professionalism and service excellence, NHAI will facilitate specialized training programs for the deployed female staff. This training will equip them with essential skills, including courteous interaction with highway users, effective handling of emergency situations, adherence to safety protocols, and efficient toll plaza management. These capacity-building efforts are designed to enhance service quality and maintain a safe, professional environment.
