Wolverton's Agora Site: Regeneration Doubles in Cost
7 Mar
Summary
- Project cost has more than doubled since 2021 agreement.
- Regeneration project on former Agora centre site to begin soon.
- New development includes 115 homes and retail units.

A significant regeneration project is set to commence on the former Agora centre site in Wolverton within two months. The cost for this development has more than doubled since initial plans were approved in 2021, now estimated at £76.8m. This revised budget was recently approved by council cabinet members, who also agreed to borrow up to £59.7m.
The project aims to transform the site, which has been a source of local memories and recent disruption. While some residents fondly remember the Agora as a buzzing social hub with a skating rink and market stalls, others noted its decline. Local business owners are eager for the new development to begin, citing that the current demolition site negatively impacts foot traffic and has contributed to business closures.
The regeneration plan includes 115 homes, with a specific block of 29 houses designated for those over 50. Additionally, retail units will be incorporated into the design. The council has decided to manage the housing development directly to expedite the process. This ambitious project is anticipated to be completed by 2028, promising a revitalized landscape for Wolverton.
