A new community grocery shop, Woking Community Grocery, has opened at Welcome Church in Surrey, with the goal of offering low-cost groceries and restoring dignity to shoppers facing rising living expenses. Individuals can join as members for a nominal £5 annual fee, gaining access to significantly discounted produce. This innovative model aims to provide a more dignified shopping experience than traditional food banks.
The grocery is supplied by organizations like the FareShare charity and operates as a hybrid between a food bank and a supermarket. Organizers state that the service is not means-tested, making it accessible to anyone experiencing financial hardship. Approximately 250 people have already signed up, with projections of over 1,000 families joining in the first year. This initiative is part of a network of 35 similar community stores operating across the UK.
