Summary
- Whataburger plans $1 million renovation of a former Taco Cabana.
- The new restaurant is expected to open in spring.
- Both chains have undergone ownership changes recently.

A familiar Texas burger chain is preparing to open a new location in Houston. Whataburger is slated to renovate an existing, former Taco Cabana restaurant situated near the Heights neighborhood. The project, estimated to cost around $1 million, is scheduled to commence on October 26. This renovation is for a 3,720-square-foot establishment.
The anticipated completion date for the work is March 29, with hopes of opening the restaurant in the spring. Taco Cabana, a San Antonio-based Tex-Mex chain, closed this particular location, along with others in the Houston area, last year. Whataburger, on the other hand, maintains a significant presence with over 50 locations across the Houston region.
Both of these Texas-founded chains have seen changes in their ownership structures in recent years. In 2019, the investment firm BDT Capital Partners acquired a majority stake in Whataburger, marking an end to its nearly seven decades of family ownership. Taco Cabana was acquired in 2021 by YTC Enterprises, an affiliate of Yadav Enterprises, for $85 million.
