This strategic move extends WeRide's European footprint to a total of six countries, following recent expansions into Spain and Slovakia. The company has already established autonomous driving deployments in France, Belgium, and Switzerland. While current European operations primarily focus on testing and pilot programs, WeRide already operates commercial autonomous driving services in China and the United Arab Emirates.
Europe has become a crucial market for Chinese autonomous driving firms, attracted by increasing competition and evolving regulations. Other Chinese companies are also actively pursuing European market entry. For instance, Pony.ai plans to launch Europe's first commercial robotaxi service, while Baidu's Apollo Go and Momenta are conducting road tests and securing permits in various European cities, underscoring the intensifying race to establish a presence in the region.
