Previous interventions included a controlled demolition to ensure structural integrity. The institute, built in the 1860s, was originally intended for educational courses but has been vacant for several years.
Broader regeneration plans for Burslem also involve the Grade II listed indoor market, for which £1 million in funding was previously withdrawn. The council is considering proposals allocating £3.36 million for the market and £2.6 million for the Wedgwood Institute, with a cabinet decision pending.
