Newlyweds' Wedding Fund Ruined by Faulty Car
26 Sep
Summary
- A couple's wedding gift money was spent on a car that broke down en route to their honeymoon.
- The £7,000 vehicle required a new engine, clutch, and gearbox shortly after purchase.
- Dozens of customers report similar issues with vehicles from the same used car dealer.
Newlyweds Amber and Nathan Cooper's honeymoon plans were derailed when their newly purchased Citroen C4, bought with wedding gift money for £7,000, suffered a critical mechanical failure. While traveling to Cornwall in August 2025, the vehicle lost power and became inoperable. Upon returning it to Trade Centre UK, it was discovered the car needed extensive repairs, including a new engine, clutch, and gearbox.
A year later, the couple from Wolverhampton remains in a dispute seeking a refund and an apology. They are not alone; 34 other customers have reported similar issues with cars bought from Trade Centre UK branches across the UK. These customers allege problems such as noisy engines and clutch malfunctions, with complicated and often refused refund claims under the Consumer Rights Act.
Trade Centre UK has acknowledged that "problems can sometimes occur" and stated they work with customers on rare occasions to find resolutions, which may include repairs, replacements, or refunds. However, customers like the Coopers and Connor and Danielle Johnson-Bray, who experienced breakdowns within days of purchase, report significant financial and emotional distress, including missed work, debt, and extensive repair costs.
One customer, Michelle Chancellor, whose Vauxhall developed engine noise issues, eventually received a refund after public attention, though it took weeks. Sandwell Council Trading Standards has launched an investigation into the complaints, urging affected individuals to report their concerns. Consumer experts note that these disputes often arise when dealerships fail to cooperate, particularly when problems surface soon after purchase.
