2 Nov
Summary
- Warringah Freeway upgrade completion expected within weeks after nearly five years.
- New northbound on-ramp from High Street to open soon.
- Upgrade essential for the $7.4 billion Western Harbour Tunnel project.
The extensive upgrade to Sydney's Warringah Freeway, a project spanning nearly five years, is nearing its completion. Final traffic changes are scheduled over the coming weeks, marking the end of significant disruption for residents and commuters. This includes the conversion of a reversible lane to a permanent northbound lane by early December and the opening of a new northbound on-ramp from High Street.
This upgrade is directly linked to the $7.4 billion Western Harbour Tunnel, which aims to provide a bypass around the Sydney CBD upon its completion in late 2028. The freeway enhancements are designed to improve safety and reliability for the approximately 400,000 people who use this vital corridor daily.
While the freeway upgrade is finishing slightly later than initially planned, it includes expanded scope, such as the High Street on-ramp opening ahead of schedule. Significant construction efforts involved substantial material usage, including over 74,000 tonnes of asphalt and 165,000 cubic metres of concrete. Beyond road improvements, a dedicated southbound bus lane and enhanced pedestrian and cycling paths have also been integrated.
