Warehouse noise roars: Residents lose sleep
24 Jul
Summary
- Residents endure constant lorry noise, impacting sleep and peace.
- Logistics firm Whistl operates from a new 60 ft high warehouse.
- Mixed messages on reversing alarms conflict with safety checks.

Residents in Tyldesley, Greater Manchester, are experiencing severe noise disturbances from a new logistics complex. Lorries operating at the 60 ft high warehouse on the Henfold Estate have been described as causing a "dreadful cacophony of racket all night," significantly disrupting sleep and home tranquility for those living nearby. The facility, developed by PLP and approved by Wigan Council, began operations recently, with Whistl being the first tenant.
Concerns are amplified by conflicting regulations for vehicle horns and reversing alarms. While operators are restricted from using such sounds between 22:00 and 05:00, daily safety checks mandated by the DVLA require horns to be tested. The Office of the Traffic Commissioner (OTC) has advised a "sensible risk-based approach," suggesting tests be conducted outside residential areas. Whistl stated they are in "full compliance" and monitoring noise levels, taking action after a breach was identified.
Local residents report constant "hissing, reversing, beeping of the horns," making their homes feel invaded. Some have lived there for years, with their properties now overlooking a busy industrial site instead of fields. The value of their homes has also reportedly decreased. Wigan Council has engaged with Whistl and residents to explore mitigation options for ongoing operational concerns at the site.
