Walmart's AI Shopping Fails: Chatbot Sales Disappoint
18 Mar
Summary
- Walmart's AI chatbot sales via ChatGPT have been disappointing.
- Conversion rates were three times lower for in-chatbot purchases.
- A new strategy involves integrating Walmart's chatbot Sparky into ChatGPT.

Walmart's initial attempt to sell products directly within OpenAI's ChatGPT has faced significant challenges, with a company executive revealing disappointing sales figures. The initiative, which allowed users to purchase a limited selection of about 200,000 items without leaving the chatbot, saw conversion rates three times lower than typical online sales. This suggests that the widespread adoption of AI agents in e-commerce may still be a distant prospect.
To address these shortcomings, Walmart is pivoting to a new approach. Starting next week, Walmart's chatbot, Sparky, will be integrated into ChatGPT, creating a 'chatbot within a chatbot' experience. This move is intended to resolve issues where customers felt compelled to buy items individually, potentially leading to fragmented shopping carts and undesirable shipping outcomes. A similar integration is planned for Google's Gemini chatbot next month.
This revised strategy aims to better reflect actual shopping habits by syncing carts from Walmart's app and website with the in-chatbot experience. Top-selling items in the initial phase included supplements and pricier goods less affected by shipping fees. The automotive, beauty, home, hardware, and tools categories comprised over half of all Instant Checkout orders. Walmart sees significant potential in attracting new customers through ChatGPT, which currently brings in new users at double the rate of search engines.
