Walmart's chairman, Greg Penner, praised McMillon's leadership, stating that he was "uniquely qualified to be CEO at the necessary time for Walmart." McMillon, who first joined the company as an hourly associate in 1984, will remain on Walmart's board of directors until the next annual shareholders' meeting in June 2026 to ensure a smooth transition. After that, he will serve as an advisor to Furner until January 31, 2027.
Furner, who is 51 years old, has been with Walmart for over 30 years, starting as an hourly associate in 1993. He has held various leadership roles across the company's operating segments and has served as the president and CEO of Walmart U.S. since 2019. Penner noted that Furner's extensive experience within the company makes him well-equipped to lead Walmart into the future, which will be "fueled by innovation and AI."
