VW Pauses India EV Push Amid JSW Talks
24 Oct
Summary
- Volkswagen halted further investment in its Indian EV program.
- The company is awaiting a clearer business plan for a JSW Group partnership.
- This pause affects Volkswagen's entry into India's electric passenger car market.
Volkswagen AG has temporarily halted further investment in its electric vehicle (EV) program in India. This pause is linked to ongoing discussions about a potential partnership with Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group and the need for a clearer business plan. The company has finalized design work for a project utilizing a cost-effective EV architecture originally developed for the Chinese market.
This strategic pause aligns with Volkswagen's global cost-cutting initiatives, driven by weaker demand in Europe and increased competition from Chinese manufacturers. The company had previously aimed to reduce EV development costs for India by a third, contingent on securing a local partner.
The proposed collaboration with JSW Group, announced last month, could encompass various vehicle powertrains, including electric, hybrid, and internal combustion engines. For Volkswagen, this partnership could help share development and manufacturing costs in a market where its presence is currently limited, primarily through its Skoda operations.
A significant challenge lies in adapting the existing EV platform for India, requiring greater localization of components and domestic manufacturing to achieve competitive pricing. Volkswagen currently does not offer any battery-electric passenger cars in India, a market where sales nearly doubled in September to over 35,000 units, with players like Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and MG already active.
