VW Explores Military Vehicles from Osnabrueck Plant
5 Mar
Summary
- Volkswagen is exploring military vehicle production possibilities.
- Prototypes were shown at the Enforce Tac defence trade fair.
- The Osnabrueck plant may be repurposed after 2027.

Volkswagen is investigating a potential pivot into military vehicle production, having developed and displayed prototypes at the recent Enforce Tac security and defence trade fair. These vehicles, including an olive-green MV.1 based on the Amarok pick-up truck and an MV.2 military-grade Crafter van, were presented to gauge market interest. The prototypes carry the 'D.E.S. Defence' marking, with Volkswagen branding absent.
This initiative comes as the company reassesses its operations, particularly at the Osnabrueck plant. Following the conclusion of T-Roc Cabriolet production in 2027, Volkswagen is seeking to either sell or reconfigure the site, which currently employs approximately 2,300 individuals. Earlier talks regarding a sale of the Osnabrueck facility to Rheinmetall stalled late last year.
The spokesperson for Volkswagen indicated that it remains uncertain whether these prototype developments will lead to concrete projects, emphasizing that the Enforce Tac exhibition was primarily for exploring potential market prospects. The full implications for the Osnabrueck plant's future are yet to be determined.
