Visa and OpenAI: Your AI Personal Shopper

Visa and OpenAI have partnered to revolutionize online shopping, allowing AI agents powered by ChatGPT to complete purchases for users. This collaboration integrates Visa's payment infrastructure directly into ChatGPT, expanding AI's role beyond product recommendations to actual transaction completion.

This new approach differs from OpenAI's previous Instant Checkout feature, which faced challenges with merchant adoption and transaction fees before being discontinued in March. The Visa partnership allows AI-driven transactions across a broad range of retailers accepting Visa payments, with Visa managing authorization and security.

OpenAI's AI technology will enable agents to understand requests and make decisions, while Visa provides the secure payment processing. "As AI agents become active participants in the economy, Visa's focus is to ensure transactions are trusted, secure and seamless," stated Jack Forestell, chief product and strategy officer at Visa.

To address concerns about overspending or incorrect purchases, the system will incorporate consumer safeguards. These include spending limits, approval requirements, and controls over which merchants can receive AI-initiated payments. This development intensifies competition, with Mastercard also expanding AI shopping capabilities for businesses.
