VinFast Eyes Affordable EVs in India After Production Pause
10 Sep
Summary
- VinFast plans two new electric vehicles for the Indian market.
- The company aims for pricing under $12,000 for new models.
- Production pause of three existing models due to cost issues.
Vietnamese automaker VinFast is strategically refocusing its efforts on the Indian market by planning the development of two new electric vehicles. This decision follows the recent suspension of local manufacturing plans for three of its existing global models, namely the VF 3, VF 6, and VF 7, due to an inability to achieve target pricing. VinFast aims to introduce affordable EVs, with plans to price one new model below $12,000, a significant departure from the current pricing of its VF 6 and VF 7 in India.
The company has initiated early discussions with Indian suppliers for these new codenamed VF X and VF Y models. This proactive engagement aims to control costs and resolve pricing challenges from the outset, preventing a recurrence of previous issues. VinFast has committed to investing $2 billion in India, viewing the country as a crucial growth opportunity and a base for serving regional markets.
VinFast currently assembles two imported models, the VF 6 and VF 7, at its Indian plant, which has an initial capacity of 50,000 vehicles annually. The automaker seeks to create a compact, affordable EV that meets local preferences for space. The Indian government's push to increase EV adoption to 30% by 2030, coupled with rising gasoline prices, presents a significant opportunity for VinFast's new strategy.
