14 Jun
Summary
- Vermilion council supports Via Rail's proposed Prairie North Line shift.
- The move aims to connect Saskatchewan communities via Lloydminster and Vermilion.
- Concerns include infrastructure challenges and longer travel times.

The Town of Vermilion has officially backed a proposal that could bring passenger rail service through the community via the Via Rail Prairie North Line project. Council sent a letter of support to the City of Lloydminster for this initiative, which aims to shift Via Rail's service from the current CN main line. This proposed rerouting would connect communities in Saskatchewan to a route passing through Lloydminster and Vermilion, ultimately linking to Edmonton.
Mayor Robert Snow highlighted the potential value for residents, offering a convenient transportation option to Edmonton and beyond, especially following the discontinuation of Greyhound bus services. He emphasized that passenger rail could serve seniors and those without personal vehicles, providing a cost-effective and reliable alternative. Residents have expressed interest in enhanced regional transportation options.
However, the proposal faces opposition. Via Rail cited potential infrastructure and safety challenges, alongside concerns that the rerouting could result in longer journey times and reduce service to communities currently on the CN Main Line. Wainwright Mayor Bruce Pugh voiced his community's desire to retain their existing Via Rail service, which is a source of local pride and a vital transport link.
