AI Data Centers Fueling Record US Power Consumption
7 Oct
Summary
- US power consumption to hit record highs in 2026 and 2027.
- AI data centers and electrification are primary drivers of demand.
- Wholesale electricity prices to rise 11% in 2026.

US power consumption is anticipated to hit unprecedented levels in 2026 and 2027, according to projections. This surge is primarily fueled by the escalating energy demands of data centers supporting artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency operations, alongside the growing trend of electrification in homes and businesses.
These factors are expected to drive total power demand from 4,195 billion kWh in 2025 to 4,288 billion kWh in 2026 and 4,356 billion kWh in 2027. Wholesale electricity prices are forecasted to increase by 11% in 2026, reaching an average of $52 per megawatt hour, influenced by extreme weather events.
While prices in some regions like the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest PJM are set to climb significantly, others like the Pacific Northwest Mid-Columbia may see decreases. Power sales are predicted to reach 1,541 billion kWh for residential customers and 1,549 billion kWh for commercial clients in 2026.
The energy generation mix will continue to shift, with coal's share decreasing from 17% in 2025 to 15% by 2027. Renewable energy's contribution is expected to rise from 24% in 2025 to 27% in 2027, while natural gas will remain stable at 40% before a slight dip, and nuclear power will hold steady at 18%.
