Summary
- US DFC invests up to $155 million in WIOCC.
- Investment supports African digital infrastructure expansion.
- US aims to offer alternatives to Chinese tech providers.
The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) is set to invest up to $155 million in WIOCC, a key provider of digital infrastructure across Africa. This significant equity investment, the DFC's largest to date, will support the expansion of undersea cables, fiber networks, and data centers in over 30 African nations.
This initiative aligns with U.S. strategic interests, aiming to foster competition and provide alternatives to Chinese technology companies, such as Huawei. The DFC views enhancing Africa's digital infrastructure as critical for U.S. competitiveness and the growth of American technology firms.
The investment, made alongside Vision Invest and the African Finance Corporation, will bolster WIOCC's operations. WIOCC offers an open-access, carrier-neutral platform, making it a preferred partner for U.S. hyperscalers and the American technology ecosystem looking to expand in Africa.
This commitment reflects a broader U.S. strategy to promote American technology abroad, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence and data center storage. Recent U.S. investments in African data centers include an $80 million facility in Kenya announced this month.
