The Federal Reserve's latest financial snapshot reveals that the typical American household's net worth saw a modest 2.5% inflation-adjusted increase from 2022 to 2025. However, this progress was not uniform across all age groups.
Households in their 30s experienced the most significant drop in median net worth, down 23.4%, amidst declining financial assets and a decrease in retirement account participation. Similarly, those in their 50s saw a 13% decline in median net worth, facing higher debt payment burdens.
In contrast, older demographics, particularly households in their 60s and the 80-plus age group, reported substantial wealth gains. The latter group saw a remarkable 60.6% surge in median net worth, largely attributed to strong performance in retirement accounts.
