Rat Incident Taints Taproom Trust
18 Mar
Summary
- A rat video impacted business at The Urban Tap.
- Health inspection found droppings but no infestation.
- Owner committed to regaining customer trust and support.

Following a video that surfaced two weeks ago showing a rat at The Urban Tap, the South Side establishment experienced an immediate dip in foot traffic and business. Owner John DeMauro acknowledged the impact, stating the business was focused on fixing the issue and regaining public trust.
An inspection by the Allegheny County Health Department on March 2 found rodent droppings in areas like the basement but noted no pest infestation. A follow-up inspection on March 16 indicated no active rodent activity, with droppings cleared and areas disinfected. The establishment has been providing weekly pest control reports to the health department.
DeMauro described the incident as a "one-off situation" involving a single intruder and highlighted new protocols, including enhanced cleaning and decluttering of unused spaces. He expressed understanding for any discomfort caused by the video and emphasized the staff's dedication to the restaurant, thanking supporters with a planned thank-you party.
Proceeds from the upcoming thank-you party will be donated to the South Side Community Action Network, a local non-profit organization. This event aims to show appreciation for continued patronage amidst the negative publicity.
