UPS Box Returned Empty: $45K Item Vanishes!
16 Dec
Summary
- A $45,000 specialized equipment piece vanished from a UPS package.
- The sender received the returned box empty, with only packing material.
- UPS offered only $500, the shipping cost, for the missing valuable.

A customer reports a significant loss after a package shipped through UPS was returned empty, with a valuable piece of specialized equipment valued at over $45,000 missing. The sender, Gustavo Gonzalez, expressed frustration with UPS's lack of transparency and assistance in locating the missing item or identifying who signed for it initially. Upon its return to the original UPS Store, the box, which should have weighed over a hundred pounds, was found to be empty except for packing material, with the attached wood pallet also gone.
Gonzalez stated he was not informed about the option to insure the shipment for its full value, a decision he now regrets. Following the discovery, he filed a report with the Orange County Sheriff's Office and a claim with UPS. The shipping company provided a check for just over $500, a sum equivalent to the shipping cost plus $100 standard coverage, far less than the item's actual worth.
He has since initiated a lawsuit in Orange County, seeking to recover the substantial financial loss. While UPS initially claimed the returned package showed no visible damage or weight change, Gonzalez provided photographic evidence disputing this. A UPS Store spokeswoman declined to comment on the pending litigation, but previously offered advice on shipment protection.
