United Parcel Service (UPS) is set to invest around $120 million in acquiring 400 robots specifically designed for unloading trucks. This substantial investment is part of a larger, ambitious $9 billion automation strategy planned over four years, targeting over 60 U.S. facilities.
The primary objective of this extensive automation plan is to significantly reduce labor costs and thereby increase profit margins. The new robotic system, developed by Massachusetts-based startup Pickle Robot Co., utilizes a robotic arm on a mobile base to lift and place boxes, streamlining warehouse operations.
Deployment of these advanced unloading robots is scheduled to commence in the second half of 2026 and extend into 2027 across various UPS facilities. This move signifies UPS's commitment to long-term automation priorities, with an overall goal of achieving $3 billion in cost savings by 2028.
