Summary
- UPI has become the most preferred payment method, surpassing cash.
- A Finance Ministry report highlights the need for rural RuPay card promotion.
- Over 65% of UPI users conduct multiple digital transactions daily.

UPI has surpassed cash as the preferred payment method in India, with over 50% of users favoring digital transactions, according to a recent Finance Ministry report.
The report, titled "Socio-Economic Impact Analysis of the Incentive Scheme for Promotion of RuPay Debit Card and low-value BHIM-UPI (Person-to-Merchant) transactions," was released on February 14, 2026.
Analysis, based on a survey of over 10,000 respondents, indicates a significant rise in digital payment adoption across various socio-economic groups. UPI accounts for 57% of transactions, while cash transactions stand at 38%, primarily due to UPI's ease of use and instant transfer capabilities.
However, the report identifies a need for focused efforts to increase RuPay debit card usage, particularly in rural and semi-urban regions.
Recommendations include merchant enablement programs and promoting low-value transactions via solutions like UPI Lite. The government has allocated over Rs 8,200 crore in incentives between fiscal years 2022 and 2025 to bolster RuPay debit cards and low-value UPI transactions.
