United, Delta Merger Talks Revealed

United Air Lines reportedly approached Delta Air Lines last year to discuss a potential merger, a move that would have combined two of the largest U.S. carriers. Delta's leadership evaluated the proposal and conducted preliminary due diligence, but the talks did not progress. This previously undisclosed discussion occurred as United aims to expand its global presence.

Earlier this year, United's CEO Scott Kirby also explored a potential merger with American Airlines, but that proposal was rejected. American's leadership criticized the idea as anticompetitive. Despite these explorations, Kirby has since indicated that major consolidation deals are unlikely for United, though the airline remains open to acquiring assets like airport slots and gates.
