United Airlines Enforces New Rule: No Headphones, No Flight!
5 Mar
Summary
- United Airlines updated its policy on February 27, 2026, to require headphones.
- Passengers must use headphones when listening to audio or video content.
- Failure to comply may result in denied boarding or removal from the flight.

United Airlines updated its Contract of Carriage on February 27, 2026, introducing a new rule mandating the use of headphones for listening to audio or video content. This change, recently noted, means passengers can be denied a seat if they fail to comply.
A spokesperson for the Chicago-based carrier confirmed the update, stating that while they previously encouraged headphone use, the expansion of Starlink internet service prompted making the rule clearer. United has equipped over 300 aircraft with Starlink and plans to outfit an additional 500 by the end of 2026.
This new regulation is the 22nd item on the list of reasons for denied boarding under safety, joining previously established rules such as 'malodorous condition.' Passengers who forget their headphones might be offered a pair by flight attendants.
