Jim Young, a transformative leader at Union Pacific Corp., passed away on Saturday at the age of 61, following a two-year struggle with pancreatic cancer. Young ascended through the ranks of Union Pacific, ultimately serving as president and chief executive officer from November 2005 until March 2012, and later as chairman. His tenure was marked by substantial investments in infrastructure and a strategic focus on meeting shipper needs.
Under his leadership, Union Pacific achieved record revenues and customer satisfaction ratings, alongside historically low operating ratios. Young was instrumental in convincing the board to invest billions in enhancing capacity, acquiring rolling stock, and improving resources. His influence extended beyond business, as he actively participated in community and educational endeavors in Nebraska.
Young's civic involvement included serving as a Presbyterian Church elder, coaching youth sports, and co-establishing the Jim and Shirley Young Scholarship Program for low-income students. He also led a community effort to fund a new artificial turf field at Omaha South High School. His significant contributions to the railroad industry were recognized with the Railroad Innovator of the Year Award in 2012.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley, three children, and two grandchildren. The family has requested that donations be made to pancreatic research or a charity of choice in lieu of flowers. Messages of condolence have been shared by numerous federal, state, and local officials, highlighting his impact on both the railroad industry and the communities he served.
