A pioneering project in Newcastle-under-Lyme is converting a 1960s multi-storey car park into 111 residential flats. Capital&Centric, the developers, stated this is the first such transformation in the UK, aiming to overcome initial public perception challenges. The Midway site's redevelopment includes a social hub with a gym and mini-cinema, contributing to the town's regeneration.
The brutalist structure is being enhanced with greenery by Clegg Construction. This initiative is part of broader regeneration efforts in Newcastle-under-Lyme, alongside Ryecroft and York Place, which collectively plan for 330 new homes. Local stakeholders, including business owners and market organisers, anticipate a positive boost to town centre footfall and economic confidence.
Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council is investing £63m of the total £90m required for these regeneration projects. The council leader highlighted that these developments are designed to create a town centre catering to young professionals and all residents, fostering affordability and confidence in the area. The former Midway car park has been replaced by the new Castle car park, which opened in January 2025.
