Millions of UK Travel Cards Expire: Holiday Chaos Ahead?
12 Apr
Summary
- Over 1.2 million UK Global Health Insurance Cards expire in 2026.
- Nearly 800,000 cards expire during peak summer holidays.
- Expired GHICs do not cover full medical costs or travel disruptions.

Millions of UK travellers are at risk of facing significant issues as over 1.2 million Global Health Insurance Cards (GHICs) are due to expire in 2026. Data indicates that approximately 800,000 of these expirations will occur between July and September, coinciding with the peak holiday season.
A GHIC provides access to necessary state healthcare in the European Economic Area and other specified countries, treating cardholders as residents. However, these cards are free, valid for up to five years, and are not a substitute for comprehensive travel insurance.
Money specialists warn that discovering an expired GHIC during a medical emergency abroad could add immense stress. Furthermore, GHICs do not cover the full spectrum of travel-related problems, such as private treatment costs, flight cancellations, lost luggage, or repatriation, with past claims exceeding £340,000.
Travellers are strongly advised to check their GHIC validity and renew it proactively, especially if it expires within six months of their travel dates. Renewals should be done through the official NHS website to avoid unofficial sites that may charge fees. It is recommended to check GHIC status concurrently with booking travel insurance, ensuring adequate coverage for health needs, destinations, and planned excursions.
